RIOT recently provided visual effects and final post production services for Wanna Luv U Girl, the new music video from blue-eyed soul singer Robin Thicke (featuring Pharrell). RIOT Editor Gavin Holmes collaborated with Director Hype Williams on the video, the first release from Thicke upcoming CD The Evolution of Robin Thicke on Star Trak/Interscope.
The video employs gorgeous tropical imagery and arresting split screen effects to support Thicke Latin-influenced ballad about the search for the ultimate love. Pharrell, who produced the recording, makes a guest appearance.
Williams, who shot the video in the Dominican Republic, edited the video on a laptop using Avid Xpress, then brought the project to RIOT for finishing. Holmes used a Discreet Flame to create the split screen effects where the letterbox frame is divided into three segments and used to tell a multi-dimensional story.
‘We also created several transitional effects where the split screen panels divide into segments, coinciding with specific drum beats,’ recalled Holmes. The effect is reminiscent of the classic title sequence to the television series Miami Vice, added Holmes.
After the initial cut was finished, Thicke flew to Atlanta and worked with Holmes in further refining the piece.
