VFX studio Atmosphere Visual Effects has won this year VES Award for ‘Outstanding Visual Effects in a Broadcast Series’ for the ‘Battlestar Galactica’ (NBC Universal) season three episode ‘Exodus.’ The studio was also nominated in the category of ‘Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Broadcast Program, Commercial or Music Video’ for the ‘Battlestar’ season two episode ‘Downloaded.’
The winning creative team includes VFX Supervisor Gary Hutzel and VFX Producer Michael Gibson for the ‘Battlestar’ production team and CG Lead Alec McClymont and Lead Compositor Brenda Campbell for Atmosphere. ‘Exodus’ featured the impossible rescue of the colonists from the Cylon-occupied surface of the planet New Caprica and a spectacular space battle sequence between the Battlestars ‘Galactica’ and ‘Pegasus’ and Cylon Base Stars, which ends in triumph and destruction.
The nominated team for Atmosphere in the category of ‘Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Broadcast Program, Commercial or Music video’ included Lead Character Animator Ryan Cronin and Character Animators Louie Hinayo, Andy Asperin and Trevor Adams. ‘Downloaded’ features the Cylon occupation of Caprica where a small band of humans stuggles to survive and resist. Atmosphere animated multiple Cylon Centurions, including one that investigates a bomb placed in an underground parking structure that explodes just as it is about to be disarmed.
‘Working on ?‚àö√ë‚àö‚â§Battlestar Galactica’s has been an enormous challenge and opportunity for our studio,’ said Atmosphere principal Jeremy Hoey. ‘It a landmark show that combines the best of story telling with visual effects. We’sre honored to have received a VES Award for our work.’
This marks the third consecutive season that Atmosphere has provided visual effects for the series and the second consecutive year the studio has captured a VES Award for its bar-setting, hallmark work on ‘Battlestar.’ The studio won a 2006 VES Award in the category of ‘Outstanding Animated Character in a Live Action Broadcast Program, Commercial, or Music Video’ for its Cylon Centurions in the Season Two ‘Battlestar’ episode ‘Fragged.’
