Taking Flight with Brandon Oldenburg

What do you get when you combine Brandon Oldenburg v1.0 with Brandon Oldenburg v2.0? Brandon Oldenburg v3.0 – of course.

To help you better understand, let’s backtrack a bit: Brandon Oldenburg v1.0. In 1995, Brandon became the third employee of Reel FX. He served as their Senior Creative Director for 15 years doing design and special effects for television and film. His clients included many of the big names in the industry including Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks and Blue Sky Studios.

In 2009, Brandon Oldenburg v2.0 was launched: Moonbot Studios. A joint venture with William Joyce, Moonbot Studios based in Shreveport, LA went on to create some of the most talked about animation in the industry including The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, winner of the 2012 Oscar for Best Animated Short, The Boy Who Learned to Fly an animated short based on the life of Usain Bolt for Gatorade, and one of my all time favorites, Emmy Award winning music video The Scarecrow created for Chipotle Mexican Grill.

The latest incarnation? Brandon Oldenburg v3.0. In this version, Brandon takes the best of Reel FX and combines it with the best of Moonbot – with plans for the best iteration of Brandon Oldenburg ever: Flight School.

Reuniting much of the key leadership from Moonbot including Limbert Fabian and Lampton Enochs, Flight School combines the creativity of Moonbot with the well developed infrastructure of Reel FX Animation Studio’s VR/AR division. In marketing speak, they’re being billed as a ‘multi-platform content studio’. In creative speak, Flight School is a studio of artists and technicians, fearlessly exploring the unknown in films, games, VR and whatever lies in the wide and boundless sky.

I like that definition so much better.

And that’s why we’ve invited Brandon to speak at motion 2017 in Santa Fe this June. This year, we’re focusing on what we refer to as ‘fringe areas’ in motion design, including FUI screen graphics, large scale motion design and VFX, games, VR and AR. Brandon v3.0 is the perfect fit.

Brandon will be sharing insight into the intersection of narrative and emerging technology, exploring the outer limits of storytelling, innovation and design. Definitely a talk designed to inspire and intrigue.

From a personal perspective, I’ve always loved Moonbot’s unique ability to craft a story. I can’t wait to see the story Brandon crafts for the motion audience!
