That’ll basically the definition of a movie trailer: The story in a nutshell.
If you’ve ever had the task of creating a movie trailer you know just how difficult it is to capture just enough of the story – without giving it all away. How well you do this, greatly impacts the success of the motion picture.
The answer was right there in front of me. Showcase these talented creatives and the excitement that surrounds motion.
It’s a similar process when you create a trailer for an event. In some ways – it’s more difficult. It’s not just a single plot that you’re trying to convey. It’s multiple stories, experiences, and interactions.
Now, let’s make this even more challenging. Have you ever noticed that it seems so much easier designing and producing a job for a client rather than for yourself? As co-founder of the event, it’s exactly the challenge I faced creating the trailer for motion 2016.
I’ll preface this with some background… Becky Padilla and I co-founded motion conference 10 years ago. We never had dreams of becoming event producers. Instead, our vision was to fill a gap in the motion design community – a community we’ve always been part of. Our mission? To help creatives achieve their dreams. And while this may seem like a lofty vision, the plan was simple. Invite successful industry creatives to speak at motion. Pros who have achieved their dreams and are living the creative life they’ve imagined and are at a stage in their career where they want to give back. Creatives who have a desire to share knowledge, wisdom, and insight – as a means to help others achieve their dreams.
So that’s the plot. How am I supposed to tell that story in a nutshell? motion is my baby! Am I too close to it to do it justice?
Ok. I got the fear and anxiety out of the way. Time to create.
It all became quite clear. I’ve lived this experience for the last 10 years. I know how it feels to be at motion. I know what it’s like to be inspired by the insight these creatives openly share. I can see it vividly in my mind. I can play it back like a movie. The excitement. The introspection. The creativity. The talent.
The answer was right there in front of me. Showcase these talented creatives and the excitement that surrounds motion by taking elements of their work, visual snapshots from motion talks, incorporating motion experiences like FACEOFF, CURRENTS, and Meow Wolf – and then animate it to an epic soundtrack. The result? The motion 2016 trailer. The story in a nutshell.
