RSA director Jonas Akerlund and 89 Edit’s Chris Davis delve deep into Pink’s inner-struggle to find her identity in the most recent video effort for Sober, from her newly released album, Funhouse.
The video starts out at a raging party in Stockholm featuring two versions of our hero Pink. One lives the rock star life, while the other watches the night unfold completely sober. We see her alone in a white padded room, dressed entirely in white.
The landscape quickly changes to a scene in a ominous wood with transparent red images of Pink being rapidly projected onto the background of trees. All along the journey, Pink tries to find herself, as her identities constantly morph and intertwine.
Akerlund’s clever use of in-camera mastery and Davis’ cutting prowess present a convincing interaction between the two Pinks, revealing each personality from many different views and landscapes adding to the videos unique charm.
Davis comments on the collaboration, “Pink and I have a long history of collaborating together so I’m always honored when I get the call to edit another of her music videos. Jonas provided great looking, edgy footage that I was very excited to dive into. There were many abstract and haunting settings which lent themselves to some exciting editorial exploration and experimentation. In the end, however, the stylized editing also had to seamlessly blend, frame, and highlight the honesty of Pink’s powerful and emotional performance and lyrics.”
