Ariel Costa’s LammeJack – Ushering in 2015 With New Spin on Old Yule Log 2.0

Ariel Costa has a novel character and animation style. Playful, colorful, and generally accompanied with sonic perfection. If you’ve seen “Lookin’ Out My Back Door” or “Alphabetic” – you know what we mean.

When he was invited to participate in Yule Log 2.0 this year, Ariel wanted to put his spin on the traditional yule log with a fun and unconventional approach. His concept for LammeJack was to spotlight the relationship between ‘man’ and nature and how – in the end – we’re all one.

In the spirit of the season he decided on a hand-crafted Christmas postcard look with the central character – a lumberjack – dressed for the cold weather in a winter wonderland of pine trees and falling snow. Ideally Ariel wanted to make his film using frame-by-frame cel animation but knew he didn’t have the time. Instead, it was produced on the computer using a rough texture treatment in Photoshop and animating the fire using solids and masks and adding an overall posterize time effect in After Effects.

Ariel wanted to add this unique piece to his portfolio, but it didn’t have sound (Yule Log 2.0 didn’t require it). Roger Lima, Founder of White Noise Lab, and Ariel’s great friend, kindly offered to create the sound design with amazing results! Proving once again, that audio is 50% of the success of any video!

So maximize your screen, set the video to loop and join us in toasting a happy and creative 2015!

About Yule Log 2.0

Yule Log 2.0 was started in 2013 by Daniel Savage. Sixty-six artists from all different disciplines were invited to reimagine the WPIX-11 Yule Log. Fifty-three unique films were made. Something Savage partnered with digital agency Wondersauce, to create a web experience allowing users to play all logs on endless loop. Within one month of launching, over 1 million logs were ‘burned’.

This year over 80 artists made 70 unique films.
